He was the third son of Afzul Khan, and grandson of son of , who had established the in . Abdur Rehman Khan was considered a strong ruler who re-established the writ of the Afghan government in after the disarray that followed the . Contents Background and early career Before his death at , on Dost Mahommed had nominated as his successor , his third son, passing over the two elder brothers, Afzul Khan and . At first, the new amir was quietly recognized. But after a few months Afzul Khan raised an insurrection in the , between the mountains and the , where he had been governing when his father died.
